Moiré phonons and impact of electronic symmetry breaking in twisted trilayer graphene

چکیده

Twisted trilayer graphene is a particularly promising moir\'e superlattice system, due to its tunability, strong superconductivity, and complex electronic symmetry breaking. Motivated by these properties, we study lattice relaxation the long-wavelength phonon modes of this system. We show that mirror-symmetric hosts, aside from conventional acoustic modes, two classes shear which are even odd under mirror reflection. The mirror-even found be gapless equivalent "phason" twisted bilayer graphene, with appropriately rescaled parameters. have no analogue in exhibit finite gap, directly proportional degree relaxation. also discuss impact mirror-symmetry breaking, can tuned displacement field or result stacking shift, rotational- as well time-reversal-symmetry resulting spontaneous order. demonstrate induce angular momentum branches. Our findings important interpretation recent experiments, concerning origin superconductivity linear-in-$T$ resistivity.

Universal classification of twisted, strained and sheared graphene moiré superlattices

Moiré superlattices in graphene supported on various substrates have opened a new avenue to engineer graphene's electronic properties. Yet, the exact crystallographic structure on which their band structure depends remains highly debated. In this scanning tunneling microscopy and density functional theory study, we have analysed graphene samples grown on multilayer graphene prepared onto SiC an...

Electronic structure and imaging contrast of graphene moiré on metals

Realization of graphene moiré superstructures on the surface of 4d and 5d transition metals offers templates with periodically modulated electron density, which is responsible for a number of fascinating effects, including the formation of quantum dots and the site selective adsorption of organic molecules or metal clusters on graphene. Here, applying the combination of scanning probe microscop...

Symmetry Breaking in Few Layer Graphene Films

Recently, it was demonstrated that the quasiparticle dynamics, the layer-dependent charge and potential, and the c-axis screening coefficient could be extracted from measurements of the spectral function of few layer graphene films grown epitaxially on SiC using angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy (ARPES). In this article we review these findings, and present detailed methodology for extr...

Symmetry-Breaking Supercollisions in Landau-Quantized Graphene.

Recent pump-probe experiments performed on graphene in a perpendicular magnetic field have revealed carrier relaxation times ranging from picoseconds to nanoseconds depending on the quality of the sample. To explain this surprising behavior, we propose a novel symmetry-breaking defect-assisted relaxation channel. This enables scattering of electrons with single out-of-plane phonons, which drast...
